Caroline

The night you came in from the cold was a night in November
The fire had already burned its way down to an ember
I woke in the night as the wind set the chimney to roar
And all I could hear was the sound of your knock at the door
You whispered my name through the cracks in the door and the plaster
And as I sat listening the wind came on faster and faster
The storm was assaulting the latch which was slipping awry
It didn't give up to the wind, but it did to your cry:
"Don't you miss me, Caroline,
And isn't it cold by your side?
Oh, don't you love me, Caroline?
No, don't you run and hide
I'll keep you with me, Caroline,
Through sorrow or through sin
And if you ever loved me, dear,
Why won't you let me in?"
I took down my gun from the wall and I laid it down by me
And out in the dark you said, "Caroline, don't you deny me,
When we married in spring how you promised to love and obey
And those vows that you made in the church you'll be keeping today."
I said to my lover, "You know that I've cried like a willow
And it's many a night that I've wished you were here on my pillow
But I won't let you in now it's winter and you've come to call
'Cause we married in spring and I buried you back in the fall!"
"Don't you miss me, Caroline,
And isn't it cold by your side?
Oh, don't you love me, Caroline?
No, don't you run and hide
I'll keep you with me, Caroline,
Through sorrow or through sin
And if you ever loved me, dear,
Why won't you let me in?"
The night came in cold and you came in colder
You crawled into bed and you rested your head on my shoulder
I lay with you, lover, as long as I possibly could
Then I lifted my rifle and I made sure you slept there for good
The year's spun around since your visit and winter's returning
November is coming and I've got the fire a-burning
And I buried you deeper in cold and in salt-covered ground
But I'm starting to think I can hear such a desolate sound
"Don't you miss me, Caroline,
And isn't it cold by your side?
Oh, don't you love me, Caroline?
No, don't you run and hide
I'll keep you with me, Caroline,
Through sorrow or through sin
And if you ever loved me, dear,
Why won't you let me in?"

Want Me To Stay
03:51

The light on the ceiling is sunset
The light on your face is surprise
As though you only met me for the first time
and it made you shy
I don't think I knew I was saying
The thing that you knew that I said
I always thought you'd run right for the exit
Here you are instead
And I don't think my luck has turned,
I've been burned too many times before
But you seem sure
It could get worse
Everything together
It could go on forever,
It sure feels that way
But it might be true
Nonetheless that you
Want me to stay
In movies it makes you feel different
In movies it makes you be brave
But all I have to offer is that I don't think that I will cave
You reach out your hand and I take it
I reach for your face and you grin
Well, I can learn a thing or two
Like you and how you let me in
And nothing else around me's changed,
It's the same world as before--
With something more
It could get worse
Everything together
It could go on forever,
It sure feels that way
But it might be true
Nonetheless that you
Want me to stay
It could get worse
Everything together
It could go on forever,
It sure feels that way
But it might be true
Nonetheless that you
Want me to stay
Want me to stay

Scenic Route
02:27
|

We set a course for the top of the world but the van broke down in Marin
It was a week or two before the oceans rose, I remember by the way you grinned
You stepped outside and you put on my sweater and you turned your face to the wind
You said "I don't see how it can get any better," and you held my hand in the din
The trains went down in early September, the planes went down in July
And try as I might I just can't remember what they sounded like in the sky
But you slipped away just Sunday last leaving nothing behind but a smile
And now that I've got nothing better to do I'll be following you in a while
I remember when we watched the sea swallow up the sand
You said "Let's take the scenic route to the promised land"
I've got a pack and I'm bringing the last of the cans and the water and salt
I've got a good book and I've got a good memory and I've got the last of the fall
so I'll be moving north and I'll be listening for your call
'cause if you don't come home to me I'm not coming home at all
I know one day you'll drop in and tip your hat and take my hand,
You'll say, "Let's take the scenic route to the promised land
Singing, let's take the scenic route to the promised land,
we'll say, let's take the scenic route to the promised land."

Sorry/Lonely
03:18
|

“i can’t wait for this year to be over” you hear like an echo
as you order a double again just to drown out the room
the same tired hosanna that everyone said from the get-go
as if somebody promised them time would take care of their wounds
god you wish that you hadn’t quit smoking,
god you wish that it wasn’t december
god you wish that you wouldn’t remember what you’re gonna regret
‘cause there’s some kinds of sorry
you already know that you’ll be in advance
i mean if you get half of a chance
that’s just how things are going to be
but the world is a wide place,
and my place is warm and the radio’s on
if you’re gonna be sorry
be sorry with me
now it’s three in the morning, the Q train is halfway to Brooklyn
and the guy in the opposite seat makes a half-hearted play
you were thinking of starting a fight about the way he’d been looking
Now you think if you went home with him you’d have somewhere to stay
and you wish that you weren’t getting sober
or you wish you weren’t such a pretender
or you wish that you wouldn’t remember what you’re gonna regret
‘cause there’s some kinds of sorry
you already know that you’ll be in advance
i mean if you get half of a chance
that’s just how things are going to be
but the world is a wide place,
and my place is warm and the radio’s on
if you’re gonna be sorry
be sorry with me
and there’s some kinds of lonely
you only learn how to breathe through
no one comes to relieve you
things are how they are going to be
but the world is a wide place,
and my place is warm and the radio’s on
if you’re gonna be lonely
be lonely with me
